Attitude of Gratitude

November 23, 2017

I always feel relaxed, calm and happy when leaving this particular house.  It has become one of my favorite places to be and I get to spend one evening a week there, working with a little boy born with Cerebral Palsy.  Not only is he one of the most magnificent human beings I’ve ever met but his mom, unbeknownst to her, has taught me a lot about importance of each and every one of our stories.  Each human being has a story.  We are the authors.  We are the interpreters.

His mom is a middle school teacher, working full time and then gets to come home each day to this beautiful little boy who needs to have constant attention and care, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  I am only there an hour or two but it took me a long time, as in months and months to get use to this house.  To be quite honest the chaos can still drive me crazy for it seems like there is alway a nursing shift change, a big sister coming and going, the dog who is quite happy to see everyone, a husband coming home from work, a grandma bringing hugs and kisses and sometimes the mom only has time to change her shoes, give her little guy a hug and kiss before her attention is demanded elsewhere.  She is interrupted several times in those couple of hours, sometimes in the middle of a sentence but she does it all with grace and gratitude.  She is always grateful for every little thing that goes on in that house and will find something positive in any situation.  I became fascinated with her words that she chooses to use and realized it all comes from her attitude.  She chooses her attitude which then governs her words.  I use to wonder how in the world she does it all, how she copes with such a full house and then it hit me, it’s all in her attitude.  SHE writes the words to her story.  She makes sure they are her words, imprinted in herself first which then influences the effect it has on others.  She finds goodness and hope in all situations and circumstances.

She has made me aware that I have a story and that I am telling that story through my thoughts and actions to not only myself but everyone around me.

I don’t know about you but I know I don’t like to be around a person with a “debbie downer” attitude and I certainly don’t want to be one either.

My story has evolved from having to trim and harvest the lavender bushes in the hot summer sun and then wonder what in the world are we going to do with all this lavender, to one of pure joy and gratitude at just the thought of spending the day with these beautiful and fragrant plants.

Then I noticed that as I rewrote my story my world began to take on a whole new look.  It also brought a lot more beauty with not only lavender but now growing chamomile and peppermint as well.

I GET to learn and research everyday which then sparks inspiration and creativity.  I GET to use our herbs to bring health and beauty to the world.

This creativity has also led me to all of you which has been one of my greatest gifts. I am grateful that I GET to not only hear all of your beautiful stories but then I get to include them in my story, for I’m pretty sure all our stories make up one big beautiful story.  We come into one another’s lives for specific purposes, of this I am sure.

These days are quite full right now as we are winterizing the field and gearing up for the holidays which has shown to me that I am still a work-in-progress when it comes to my own attitude.  It is far too easy to succumb to feelings of stress, being overwhelmed and burdened.  Awareness is key!  Once we recognize a particular attitude, we then have a decision to make.  A consistent work-in-progress.  The holidays will bring us together and for that I am truly grateful as I will GET to hear more of your stories!

See you soon….
